how to start a CR500 bike lean the bike over way over toward the ground when the fuel runs out of the over flow tube just lean the bike back up and kick it it should start |

| crmoe : |
install a 90 kick start.the original 90degree offers no leverage and causes nasty bone splinters from your foot slipping off.look at a new rod and you will see the ergonomic leverage advantage.start the bike at quarter throttle.forgot to mention that earlier. |

i own an 84 cr 500.starts in just a couple of kicks.the trick is to install a primer in the carb boot.these engines are big and need the fuel to start.with out a primer you are just kicking the motor to get enough fuel and eventually it will start.i put the piston at the top then prime,do this twice.kick the motor at half stroke to avoid a broken foot and do not use that stupid choke.if this does not work then prime with gas again, hand off that fuckin choke!the bike will start without flooding.i weigh 155 lbs and now have no fear of starting my bike.wear boots and have fun! |

Just picked up an 84 cr500r. The top of the piston was "exploded". Its in the shop now and cant wait to get the beast back. Do you have good links to find parts as they are very hard to come by. May need a trans. and also looking for an exhaust. Your 99 is kick ass. Later |

easyrydher1...i used to have the same start up problems with my 95 cr500. i switched to leaded racing fuel...about 110 octane...and tough starts are a thing of the past. it's called cam2 and i get it right out of the pump. it's expensive but totally worth it when it only takes 3 kicks on a sub-zero temp. day. also..i almost never foul plugs. |

I keep posting here then I don't know how to come back to see the posts or replies to my posts! My email is easyrydher1@yahoo.com. I too have an AWESOME 98cr500, 1 full mil over, v-force with boysen reeds, 1 jet up from stock, auto clutch, new 14/53 sprokets, excel black rims, all black new plastics, new michelins and all hand polished frame gaurds, pro taper, new gnarly with a fmf power core 2, and on and on. This bike is mind blowing fast! I broke it down to nothing and went from top to bottow, front to rear and it is just as clean as it is mean. I will have to admit though, it is a B*@$^ to cold start it!! Any suggestions? My Son has a cr250 with much of the same that is on my 500 and his is just as ugly to cold start! There is nothing like raping that 500, its like G-force of a f-16 fighter! AWESOME BIKES!! |

My first cr500 was a 1984, aircooled it was the first year honda made a 500 and I bought it from a girl, it still looked brand new in 1988 and it was her third open class bike. There is a special way to start a cr500, if you ask most anyone they will tell you the wrong way.. They say to bring it up just past tdc and give it a full kick (WRONG ANSWER) What you do is push the kick lever all the way down to the bottom of the stroke, now lift your foot up maybe four inches the kick lever will come up with it then give it 2 or 3 quick short kicks within that four inches at the bottom of the kick, on the 2nd or 3rd kick give it a very short (quarter turn or so of the throttle) and it should lite right off.. since discovering this my bike starts on the 2nd or 3rd kick every time cold or after running it hard it dosen't matter... I have 2 cr500's and a buddy has one.. they are all just a little bit different but after some practice and you figure your bike out it will start every time.. Now go ride |

I have an 86 cr500 converted into a three wheeler. The porting was so extensive that it weeped out of the outside of the cylinder and had to be welded up. It has a 44 Mikuni carb and FMF pipe. WHen you wick the throttle it is like hitting the Nitrous button, it is violent....And I like it |
