Default 98 GSXR 1100 Gauge Cluster

I just purchased a 1998 1100 GSXR and the speedometer self destructed on the first ride. 22 miles into the first ride out the indicator needle went crazy, broke off and it made some high pitched noises and melted the base of the indicator needle before it got quite and I could enjoy the rest of my ride.

Question is, I'm assuming that I need to replace the entire cluster so if someone out there knows if this is correct please confirm. Also, are the 1995-1998 clusters all interchangeable? I"m also wondering if the speedometers on these are a problem or if something was up with mine? I checked out the speedometer cable and it is well lubed and looks fine. The bike had been sitting for years as the OD only has 4400 miles and the tires were dry rotted, so I'm wondering if something inside to guage dried out or something from lack of use?

Other than the speedo problem this bike works pretty much like new and the performance blew me away! The bike is completely original and still retains the stock pipes. I'm wondering what gains could be had with a set of slip on pipes and a jet kit?

Thanks for any advice and wisdom anyone can share with me about these bikes as it's my first full blown sport bike and my first Suzuki.
